When It Comes to Words for Alzheimer’s Patients, Less is More
What do you do to try to get your Alzheimer’s patient to do what you want them to do? Do you try to explain the situation and the reasons they would benefit from the activity? By the time you get to the end of the explanation, the patient may have forgotten how you began. Here are some tips for communicating more effectively.
1. Say as few words as possible.
2. Stick out your hand and say, “Let’s go.”
3. Say, “We’re going to have some fun.”
4. Put your arm around her shoulder.
5. Above all, meet meanness with kindness.
